Why My Art Helps with Nervous System Regulation: Integrating Geometry, Virtues, and Chinese Medicine

My art serves as a powerful tool for nervous system regulation, particularly benefiting individuals who are neurodivergent, have complex PTSD (CPTSD), or are interested in balancing their internal states. The essence of my work is rooted in ancient Chinese Medicine, using geometry, virtues, and natural mechanics to mirror the way the human body develops—through buoyancy and fluidity.

The Role of Geometry in Nervous System Regulation

The geometric patterns in my art are designed to create balance and harmony. Geometry is a universal language, affecting us on a fundamental, subconscious level. Our nervous systems are highly sensitive to order and symmetry, which can elicit feelings of calm, safety, and ease. The precision of shapes like circles, spirals, and grids act as visual cues that reflect the body's natural patterns of growth and balance, echoing the flow of Qi in Chinese Medicine.

These geometric designs tap into our primal need for structure and predictability, gently guiding the nervous system into states of regulation. For those who experience sensory overwhelm, such as individuals with neurodivergence, the structured nature of these patterns offers a soothing, grounding effect. The calming influence of symmetrical designs can reduce hyperarousal and allow the nervous system to enter a more parasympathetic, or rest-and-digest, state.

Virtues and Emotional Balance

In Chinese Medicine, virtues like compassion, patience, and integrity correspond to different organs and meridians in the body. My art integrates these virtues visually, offering subtle reminders that evoke these qualities within the observer. These virtues have a direct impact on emotional regulation, fostering resilience and creating emotional alignment with the body’s natural state of equilibrium.

For people with CPTSD, where emotional dysregulation is common, the gentle representation of virtues through color, form, and symbolism can offer a visual reminder to reconnect with core emotional states. This fosters a sense of safety and groundedness, allowing the nervous system to shift from a state of hypervigilance to one of peace and internal balance.

Buoyancy and the Natural Mechanics of Growth

Human development, from our early days in the womb, is guided by principles of buoyancy and fluidity. We grow in a state of weightlessness, surrounded by amniotic fluid, which provides support and balance. My art reflects these mechanics by incorporating fluid forms and patterns that mimic the movement of water, echoing the rhythm and flow of life.

This focus on buoyancy helps regulate the nervous system by engaging the senses in a way that feels nurturing and safe. For individuals who are neurodivergent or have experienced trauma, sensory processing can often feel overwhelming. By creating artwork that mirrors the supportive environment we grew within, the nervous system can return to a state of co-regulation, feeling held and supported rather than stressed or overstimulated.

Conclusion: Art as a Healing Reflection

By combining geometry, virtues, and the mechanics of buoyancy rooted in Chinese Medicine, my art offers more than just aesthetic value—it provides a framework for nervous system regulation. Whether you are managing the challenges of neurodivergence, complex trauma, or simply seeking to restore balance to your nervous system, the patterns, symbols, and forms within my work offer a pathway to peace, regulation, and healing. Through the ancient wisdom embedded in each piece, my art becomes a visual and energetic mirror of the body's natural ability to heal and grow.
