The Principle of Harmonization
Neurodivergent Embodiment and Sexual Health
(I’m using harmonization as a descriptor for the totality of The Generation and Restriction Cycles of TCM)
The journey to understanding and embracing neurodiversity has opened doors for new perspectives and approaches to well-being. I’d like to introduce a concept that has become key in my Work: Harmonization.
Harmonization is a principle that promotes balance and well-being in neurodivergent individuals, specifically in the context of embodiment and sexual health. This blog post will introduce the concept of Harmonization, discuss its distinctions from Emotional and Nervous System Regulation, and explore how it can empower the neurodivergent community in the realm of intimacy and sexuality.
What is Harmonization?
Harmonization is a principle rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that integrates the Generation and Restriction Cycle, focusing on creating balance and harmony within an individual.
In the context of Neurodivergent Embodiment and Sexual Health, Harmonization acknowledges the unique patterns of sensory processing, emotional regulation, and interpersonal dynamics experienced by neurodivergent individuals.
By applying this principle, we can develop personalized strategies and environments that facilitate healthy and satisfying sexual experiences while fostering open communication, mutual understanding, and respect in intimate relationships.
Harmonization vs. Emotional and Nervous System Regulation
While Emotional and Nervous System Regulation are essential components of overall well-being, Harmonization goes beyond these concepts to specifically address the unique challenges and experiences of neurodivergent individuals in the context of intimacy and sexuality.
Emotional Regulation focuses on managing and responding to emotional experiences, whereas Nervous System Regulation pertains to the body's capacity to maintain balance and cope with stressors. Both concepts are vital for general health and well-being, but they do not explicitly address the distinct needs and experiences of neurodivergent individuals within intimate relationships and sexual contexts.
In contrast, Harmonization incorporates principles of balance and harmony from TCM, targeting the adaptation of environments, support systems, and communication strategies to create personalized approaches that cater to the distinct needs and experiences of neurodivergent individuals in the realm of sexual health.
The Power of Harmonization for Neurodivergent Individuals
Applying the principle of Harmonization has the potential to transform the lives of neurodivergent individuals by empowering them to express and explore their sexuality in a safe and nurturing context. By acknowledging and embracing the unique aspects of neurodivergent embodiment, we can create inclusive and supportive spaces that foster growth, connection, and well-being.
Some practical applications of Harmonization in the context of sexual health may include:
Encouraging open communication about sensory preferences, emotional needs, and boundaries.
Creating sensory-friendly environments that cater to an individual's specific sensitivities.
Incorporating relaxation techniques or mindfulness practices to help with emotional and nervous system regulation.
Educating partners and support networks about neurodiversity and the unique experiences of neurodivergent individuals.
